This society was formed by a group of enthusiasts with the
intention to work with documentation, care and regeneration in a unique arboretum.
New planting should be focused on trees and shrubs not already growing in Sweden.
The symbol of the society is the cone of the Common Chinafir Cunninghamia
lanceolata (Taxodiaceae family) which you can see in the background.
The arboretum was founded in 1922 when cavalry captain Albert Wallis bought
the Esperöd farm in Kivik which is situated in the southernmost
part of Sweden. He started planting trees, mostly pines, immediately. His
intention was to construct "an experimental garden to study the suitability
of magnificent species for decoration of our parks". At his death in 1925 he
had planted 3000 trees! He's work was continued by his wife and her brother.
There were a period of decline from about 1960 which was brought to a halt by
the formation of the Kiviks-Esperöd Arboretum Society. The arboretum has now
about 200 big trees.
This site is mainly in the Swedish language
but the plants are presented with both Swedish and latin names. The links page
as well as the links in the individual presentations leads to sites which are
mostly in english.
"TRÄDREGISTER" is a register of all the trees in the arboretum
with links to presented trees.
"REDAKTÖRENS SIDA" is there I present plants from the arboretum
and also arboreta from all over the world together with other interesting things
for anyone interested in trees!
